AMAZON
OPERATIONS

At the start of 2021, Amazon had an ask: Showcase the faces and voices of their operations teams across the world during upcoming heritage months.

Their Amazon Ops Life Instagram page served as a recruitment platform, highlighting diversity and opportunity to prospective employees.

We developed content series using a range of formats – video, carousels, audio – that spoke to the depths of current employees and showed prospects that Amazon is a place where they, too, will belong.

For Black History Month, we created a series to show that history isn't simply the past – it's being made right now.

I interviewed several Black employees – ranging from managers to VPs, all coming from diverse backgrounds – to hear not only about the legacies they're leaving, but how the legacies of others have inspired them in the work they do.

HIGHLIGHTING HISTORY MAKERS

PAST & PRESENT

Vice President J. Ofori Agboka's legacy is inspired by Civil Rights legends like late Congressman John Lewis - and even his mom, a Grambling State University alumna who participated in the restaurant boycotts as a student. The lessons he's learned guide his ethos: Nurture individuals to build a collective that works toward greater good.

In her role as Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment, Alicia Boler Davis has already begun fulfilling her legacy helping others. As she leads hundreds of thousands of associates around the world and oversees development of new technologies, she's not only ensuring the safety, well-being, and satisfaction of Amazon employees, but that of customers, as well.

Dovie Majors is inspired by #BlackHistoryMakers like John A. Stokes, a plaintiff in Brown v. the Board of Education. Why? As a fellow military veteran with a passion for paving a path for others, she knows the importance of creating a legacy of inclusion. For her, that starts with putting positivity in motion – empowering just as she once was.

In her 14-year tenure at Amazon, IT Support Engineer Sophia Skeens has learned a lot – not just about technology, but also about herself. Sophia's journey and the knowledge gained, both as an IT engineer and a transgender woman, has empowered her. She wants to share it so that others can feel the same. "I try my best to be the role model that I wish I had." #ChallengeChampionChange

Director of Prime Air Engineering Jovonia Thibert doesn't want to make an impact for herself. She wants to change futures and the face of STEM – starting at Amazon, where she launched a computer science scholarship program for underrepresented students. As a leader who values reaching back to mentor, advocate and be an ally, Jovonia will undoubtedly make her mark beyond Amazon. #ChallengeChampionChange

Shilpa Vadodaria isn't just a Senior Program Manager, she's the president of Body Positive Peers, an Amazon Affinity Group that "advocates for size-inclusive legislation, products and services as well as educating on sizeism to build awareness and allyship." That's just one of the ways Shilpa's challenging the status quo and making her impact at Amazon – all while challenging herself to grow outside of her comfort zone. #ChallengeChampionChange

CHALLENGE.
CHAMPION.
CHANGE.

Amazon also came to us for Women's History Month to showcase the diversity of women and their experiences on the operations teams.

I had the honor of interviewing women from a bevy of backgrounds – trans, military, Polish, and more – to learn about what they've overcome and how they're making an impact.
